Adolescent and Young Adult Social Worker Assistant – Murtha Cancer Center

HJF is seeking a Adolescent and Young Adult Social Worker Assistant  to support the Murtha Cancer Center (MCC) located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to MCC. U.S. citizenship required.
The John P. Murtha Cancer Center is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer-trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies.
The incumbent will provide direct support to AYA cancer patients, and their families, receiving treatment at WRNMMC and will partner with the Ulman Foundation headquartered in Baltimore, MD. You may learn more via the following link: https://ulmanfoundation.org/

Responsibilities: 
  1. Function as a patient support navigator for the Murtha Cancer Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in collaboration with the Social Work team from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.
  2. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the delivery of all programs and services for adolescent and young adult patients in collaboration with the clinical team using AYA Best Practices. Participate in biweekly AYA Patient Navigation team meetings to discuss and provide updates regarding patients, barriers to care, and resources. Participate in biweekly virtual case studies to integrate and support Ulman AYA PN Network. Collaborate with the Patient Navigation team on best practices, strategies, data, and patient outcomes.  Contribute to AYA Oncology thought leadership through various programs and partnerships.
  3. Demonstrate a high degree of expertise and act as a resource to facilitate and enhance the development of quality care for patients and their families.
  4. Uses a range of therapeutic and other interventions such as supportive counseling, education, and groups to address issues and manage psychosocial implications of having cancer.
  5. Advocates with or on behalf of patients, families, and caregivers to remove barriers to quality care, to address gaps in services and to work for any changes needed to policies and programs.
  6. Facilitate patient education on the topic of fertility preservation, make referrals as needed.
  7. Participate in Cancer Center meetings and other committee meetings as needed. Collects and analyzes data and trends and report findings. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  The ideal candidate has experience working with the adolescent and young adult population. Experience working with oncology patients in a hospital setting is preferred. Experience working with military patients is preferred. 
Minimum Education: Associate's degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred. 
Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience required for this position.
Work Environment: This job takes place in a office and clinic setting.
Work Arrangement: Onsite. 
Background/Security: U.S. citizenship required; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier III Investigation/ Secret Clearance and Common Access Card (CAC).
