Somethings Mentor (California)
Somethings Mentor
Remote (United States) · Part-time · $20/hr + monthly bonuses
Support only works when people actually use it. We're here to be that support for our struggling youth.
Somethings’ exists to fill the gaps in the mental health landscape and to support youth who would otherwise be falling through the cracks. Somethings creates a space where teens can form real relationships with their mentors who get them, stick with them, and help them get better.
25 million teens in the U.S. are struggling with their mental health. Every teen who downloads Somethings is struggling. Our job is to make sure they don't just show up — they stay, connect with a real human who cares about them, and get the support they need to thrive.
What you'll actually do
As a Mentor, you're the person a teen can go to for support, someone a younger version of you would have wanted in your corner. You'll build a real, ongoing relationship with the teens on your caseload. This isn’t a one-off convo or a crisis support line, but a relationship with individuals that grows over weeks and months.
Day to day, that looks like:
- Chatting with your mentees during your scheduled hours, primarily via text-based support
- Listening without judgment, whatever they bring: a hard day, a win, something fun, or nothing in particular
- Helping them work through a tough moment without trying to solve it for them
- Staying curious about their interests, hobbies, and goals
- Celebrating the good days and being someone to lean on through the tough ones
- Sharing pieces of your own story, when it helps a teen feel less alone
- Documentation as needed
- Recognizing when a conversation needs more support, and looping in our Clinical Supervisors when needed — we train you thoroughly on this
- Meet with your Lead Mentor and Clinical Supervisor to support your progress and skills as a Mentor
You don't need to have all the answers. You need to show up, be present, and be someone they can count on.
Who we're looking for
You don't need a background in mental health to be great at this. What you need is lived experience, empathy, and the willingness to show up consistently. Our official requirements for the role are:
- Lived experience with mental health challenges, trauma, substance use recovery, and willingness to share your story in a way that helps others
- Comfort navigating difficult conversations — prior experience in crisis intervention or de-escalation is a plus, not a requirement; we train you on this
- Knowledge and awareness of basic grounding skills and coping mechanisms
- A growth mindset — open to feedback and committed to improving
- Highly organized, tech-savvy, and comfortable working across apps and digital tools
- Fluent in English (other languages gladly welcomed!)
- Willingness to complete Certified Peer Specialist certification with us — and a plus if you're already certified in any state
- Able to commit to the schedule and tech requirements (listed below)
Schedule, tech, and what we offer
Schedule: 4:30pm-10pm PST Mon–Thurs; 4:30pm-7pm PST Fri (24.5 hrs/week across 5 days)
Tech requirements (needed by the time you start with teens, not to apply):
- Reliable internet: 10 Mbps download / 5 Mbps upload minimum
- High-quality camera and headphones or microphone
- A private, quiet, HIPPA compliant workspace with good lighting and a clean background
What we offer:
- $20/hr, plus monthly bonuses: $60 for each teen above 20 you keep engaged (5+ days of app use/month)
- Free CPS training and certification, if needed, plus further educational opportunities
- Fully remote, flexible location
- Career growth through our Lead Mentor & internal pathways
- Real experience for future work in mental health and related fields
Hiring process:
- Written application
- Video interview (recorded on your own time)
- Live interview (~90 min), including a text-based roleplay simulating Mentor support on our platform
- Offer, background check, and training
- Activation as a Mentor once training and certification are complete
We have high standards — fewer than 10% of applicants are accepted. Timeline to start varies, especially where certification requires state review (8-12 weeks on average); candidates who already hold CPS credentials are typically faster to activate.
