VA Education Benefits Advisor (VA Workstudy)

To be eligible, student(s) must be receiving benefits under one of the following Title 38, U.S.C. benefits, (Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35) or Title 10, U.S.C benefits, (Chapters 1606) education programs as this is a VA Work Study position. 

Under the general direction of the Veterans Success Center staff, the Student Assistant is responsible for assisting students with VA benefit information, research student eligibility for VA education benefits, coordinate with the School Certifying official to provide certification help and enrollment information for students. This role requires the use of sound judgement and excellent interpersonal skills when representing Sacramento State to diverse populations of current and prospective students, administrators, counselors, faculty, staff, and community members. It demands the ability to handle multiple tasks with competing deadlines. To be eligible, student(s) must be receiving benefits under one of the following Title 38, U.S.C. benefits, (Chapters 30, 31, 33, 35) or Title 10, U.S.C benefits, (Chapters 1606) education programs as this is a VA Work Study position. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must be enrolled in nine (9) or more units every semester employed (Summer excluded) 
  • Currently have and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above 
  • In good academic standing 
  • Proficient with computer software, such as Microsoft Suite of products  
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and be comfortable with public speaking 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and manage a heavy workload effectively  
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse population 
  • Ability to learn quickly and work independently 
  • Ability to gather, interpret and communicate complex information  
  • Prior experience working in a school veterans center is desirable but not required 
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Attention to detail

Essential Functions of the Position: 

  • Answer questions from students who visit the Veterans Success Center (VSC) regarding VA benefits 
  • Review students records to ensure courses align with respective degree program(s) 
  • Use Microsoft Office Suite to create and maintain documents, and reports 
  • Correspond via telephone and email to individuals on and off-campus 
  • Assist with promoting VSC programs and events 

Conditions of Employment: 

  • Must be available to work during normal business hours (Monday – Friday 8 AM to 5 PM) 
  • Student(s) can work up to a maximum of 25 hours per week (minimum of 20 hours per week)
  • As needed by the Veterans Success Center
