Male Student Mentor/ Aide
Job Title: Male Student Mentor / Community Habilitator (Part-Time)
Location: Nassau county, NY
Hours: Part-time (Flexible; potential to increase upon OPWDD funding)
About the Role:
We are looking for a reliable, calm, and patient MALE college student to work 1-on-1 with a high-functioning 18-year-old young man with autism. He is fully verbal and has no behavioral issues, but struggles with anxiety and needs a supportive role model to help him navigate the transition into adulthood.
This is a "Community Habilitation" role focused on building independence and confidence. You won’t just be a "sitter"—you’ll be a mentor helping him engage with the world.
Key Responsibilities:
- Community Outings: Accompany him to local spots (cafes, libraries, shops) to build comfort in social settings.
- Life Skills: Provide light coaching on daily tasks like money management, navigating public transit, or ordering food.
- Social Mentorship: Engage in conversation and activities to help improve social cues and reduce anxiety.
- Role Modeling: Be a positive, steady presence who encourages him to step out of his comfort zone.
Qualifications:
- Personality: Must be exceptionally patient, and calm.
- Background: Ideal for Education, Special Education, Psychology, or Social Work majors.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills are a must.
- Reliability: Consistent attendance is crucial for building trust and reducing his anxiety.
