Youth Director

Part-time Position (non-exempt)
Hours: approx. 15-20 hours/week
Reports to: Senior Pastor

General Description

The Youth Director provides leadership and oversight for Aldersgate UMC’s youth ministry for students in grades 6–12. This role develops and leads a ministry that helps young people grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ, build meaningful relationships within the church, and live out their faith in their schools, families, friendships, and communities.

The Youth Director cultivates a welcoming and relational environment where every student feels known, valued, and connected. This individual recruits, equips, and leads adult volunteers; partners with parents and families; coordinates youth programs and events; and collaborates with church staff and ministry leaders. The Youth Director models a growing Christian faith, servant leadership, integrity, and a commitment to the mission and ministry of Aldersgate UMC (www.aumctustin.org). 

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead a comprehensive youth ministry strategy for students in grades 6–12 that aligns with the mission and vision of Aldersgate UMC.
  • Create meaningful opportunities for youth to grow in faith through worship, Bible study, retreats, mission experiences, service projects, and other discipleship opportunities, while introducing them to the Wesleyan understanding of Christian faith.
  • Build authentic relationships with youth through consistent presence, encouragement, mentoring, and spiritual support.
  • Foster a welcoming culture, in alignment with Aldersgate’s Inclusivity Statement, where every student feels valued, respected, connected, and included.
  • Maintain regular communication with parents and families and provide resources and encouragement to support faith development at home.
  • Recruit, develop and support a healthy and sustainable volunteer team through encouragement, coaching, appreciation, and leadership development.
  • Maintain youth ministry calendars, registrations, attendance records, communications, and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Maintain full compliance with Aldersgate UMC Safe Gatherings and all child and youth protection policies.
  • Develop and administer the annual youth ministry budget in collaboration with church leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with church staff, parents, volunteers, and other ministry leaders to integrate youth into the broader life of Aldersgate UMC.
  • Establish annual ministry goals and evaluate ministry effectiveness in collaboration with the Senior Pastor and church leadership.

  • Youth Ministry: Understands the spiritual, relational, and developmental needs of adolescents and can create engaging environments for discipleship and belonging.
  • Leadership Development: Ability to recruit, equip, motivate, and develop adult volunteers and youth leaders.
  • Communication: Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; comfortable teaching, leading discussions, and speaking with groups.
  • Organization: Strong organizational and project-management skills with the ability to manage schedules, events, budgets, registrations, and ministry logistics.
  • Collaboration: Works effectively with staff, parents, volunteers, and other ministry leaders.
  • Initiative and Creativity: Demonstrates flexibility, creativity, problem-solving, reliability, and strong follow-through.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Demonstrated Christian faith and commitment to discipleship and ministry.
  • Experience working with youth in ministry, education, mentoring, camp, nonprofit, or related settings.
  • Ability to build meaningful relationships with youth and families.
  • Strong communication, leadership, relational, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to successfully complete all required background checks and safety training.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, retreats, camps, mission trips, and special events as needed.
  • Experience recruiting and leading volunteers and planning youth ministry programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Christian Education, Youth Ministry, Education, or a related field, preferred.
  • Experience serving in a United Methodist or Wesleyan ministry context, preferred.
