Activity Specialist – Sports & Fitness
Location: COMPASS Elementary After-School Program at P.S. 44, Staten Island, NY

Job Type: Part-Time (Approximately 20 hours/week)

Schedule:

  • Monday–Friday
  • 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM
  • In Person

Pay: $22–$25 per hour (based on experience)

About Us

The Integrated Athletic Initiative (IAI) is a Staten Island nonprofit organization operating the COMPASS Elementary After-School Program at P.S. 44 (The Thomas C. Brown School) under a NYC DYCD contract. We provide students in grades K–5 with a safe, engaging, and enriching environment where they can build confidence, develop healthy habits, and have fun through sports and physical activity.

We're seeking an energetic and passionate Activity Specialist – Sports & Fitness to inspire children through movement, teamwork, and healthy living.

Position Summary

As the Activity Specialist, you will plan and lead daily sports and fitness activities for elementary-aged students while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, confidence, and healthy lifestyle habits. This role is perfect for coaches, trainers, physical educators, or anyone passionate about making a positive impact through athletics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead structured daily physical activity sessions for students in grades K–5.
  • Teach sport-specific skills while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyle habits.
  • Lead activities including basketball, soccer, flag football, fitness circuits, yoga, and other recreational sports.
  • Adapt activities to meet varying ages, skill levels, and available spaces.
  • Incorporate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) concepts such as cooperation, conflict resolution, communication, and goal setting.
  • Ensure all activity areas remain safe, organized, and properly supervised.
  • Track student participation and communicate with Group Leaders regarding individual student needs.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and required IAI/DYCD trainings.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or a related field preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Minimum of 2 years of coaching, instructing, or leading youth sports or fitness programs.
  • Ability to engage and motivate children of varying ages and abilities.
  • Strong classroom and group management skills in high-energy environments.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification required (or must obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Experience working with diverse youth populations preferred.
  • Must successfully complete fingerprinting, SCR, Justice Center, and all required background clearances.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in athletics, coaching, personal training, dance, martial arts, or group fitness.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

  • Statewide Central Register (SCR) clearance
  • Staff Exclusion List (SEL) clearance

  • Compliance with all applicable NYC DOHMH health and safety requirements before unsupervised contact with children
