Overview
The Occupational Therapist provides home‑based treatment to support the development, rehabilitation, and functional independence of patients with physical, cognitive, or emotional limitations. This role delivers individualized care in the home setting and requires strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with the broader care team.
Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Review and interpret referrals; complete comprehensive evaluations using standardized assessments
- Establish functional baselines and develop individualized treatment plans
- Provide direct patient care and instruction to support functional independence
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers on therapeutic techniques and home programs
- Participate in interdisciplinary discussions and care planning
- Set patient goals and estimate treatment duration
- Support program development and departmental process improvement
- Serve as a resource in areas of clinical expertise
- Provide in‑services within the Bronson Rehabilitation System
- Design and fabricate splints or assistive devices as needed
- Cross‑train within Rehabilitation Services when appropriate
Administrative Duties
- Document evaluations, treatment plans, interventions, and progress in the electronic health record within required timelines
- Communicate any documentation barriers to leadership
- Maintain accurate, complete, and legible patient records
- Participate in committees, task forces, and process improvement initiatives
- Demonstrate effective time management
- Supervise COTAs, Rehab Clinical Assistants, OT students, COTA students, volunteers, and athletic trainers
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy
- Current Occupational Therapy license in good standing with the State of Michigan
- BLS certification within 3 months of hire
- Valid Michigan driver’s license, reliable vehicle for daily business use, and proof of auto insurance
- Ability to pass an MVR check prior to start date
Preferred
- Clinical experience
- Experience in home care or rehabilitation settings
Skills and Competencies
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a care team
- Keyboarding skills for PC/mobile documentation
- Ability to manage delicate patient care situations with professionalism
- Social sensitivity and ability to communicate effectively in English
Physical and Work Requirements
- Regular standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs
- Occasional assistance with heavier tasks or patient transfers
- Ability to respond quickly in patient care situations
- Work may involve mental and visual fatigue due to varied duties and deadlines
- Up to 40 percent of time may involve computer use
