POSITION: Assistant Coach for Cross Country

 

Putnam Middle School is seeking an energetic and dedicated individual to join our cross country program as Assistant Coach for the 2026-2027 fall season. We are looking for a committed professional who will help foster a positive, supportive, and safe environment while teaching fundamental running skills, sportsmanship, and discipline to our student-athletes.

 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Support Head Coach: Assist the Head Coach with planning, organizing, and executing daily practices and cross country meets.

Coaching & Instruction: Help plan and conduct effective, age-appropriate practices focusing on fundamental running mechanics, pacing strategies, trail safety, and physical conditioning.

Meet Management: Assist with meet preparation, course setup, runner timing, and support student-athletes during competitions.

Student Development: Mentor student-athletes, emphasizing sportsmanship, responsibility, and commitment to academic success.

Logistics & Supervision: Directly supervise student-athletes during all team activities—including practices, trail runs, and travel—ensuring a safe environment.

Administrative Tasks: Assist with equipment/uniform management and maintain clear, effective communication with the Head Coach, Athletic Coordinator, school staff, and parents.

Compliance: Ensure adherence to all school, district, and athletic association rules and regulation

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CT Certification 600: Interscholastic/Intramural Coach or eligibility for certification required
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Demonstrated knowledge of running fundamentals, distance training progressions, and safety protocols for middle school athletes.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under the direction of the Head Coach.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and build confidence in runners of all skill levels.
  • Commitment to academic excellence and holistic student development.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.

 

RATE OF PAY:        $2,153 for the 2026-2027 School Year (* fall season)
