Paid $19.29 Per hour, 15 - 20 hours per week, 3-5 days/week.

(Must commit to both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters)

The Role 

The Student Career Advisor (SCA) role is more than just checking resumes. The SCA will provide technical guidance needed to navigate degree and career choices along with holistic support needed for students and alumni. The SCA will work 1:1 with students and alumni who at times might be feeling the pressure of graduation and career shifts. 

 

Term of Placement & Evaluation Period

This position requires a 15–20 hour per week commitment for the Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 semesters with an ideal start date in June 2026.

  • Evaluation Phase: The first 3 months of employment serve as an initial evaluation period. During this time, the Student Career Advisor (SCA) will undergo training in career development, technical resume and cover letter writing, and active listening techniques.
  • Continued Placement: Upon a successful performance review at the 3-month mark, the student will be offered continued placement for the remainder of the academic year (and potentially beyond), contingent upon maintaining active graduate-level enrollment and satisfactory performance.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide empathetic, one-on-one advising for students and alumni navigating career choices or anxiety regarding major selection and post-graduation transitions.
  • Assist students with resume and cover letter writing, job searching, interview preparation and other career-related tasks and skills. 
  • Track appointments and maintain appointment notes in Handshake. 
  • Build relationships and facilitate programming with faculty, student groups, and other Student Affairs teams including first-year student departments (e.g., FYE, Pre-collegiate, FaM, etc.)  
  • Stay current on recruitment tools (ATS, AI interviewers) to coach students on navigating the modern, tech-heavy job market.
  • Create, edit, and contribute career-related resources (digital, print, and video) students can access to assist them in their career journey.  
  • Staff and support other LynxConnect events such as networking events, workshops and presentations, career fairs, the undergraduate research symposium, and others.  
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Minimum Qualifications  

  • Current graduate student in Counseling, Social Work, Couples & Family Therapy, Student Affairs, Human Development, Higher Education, or HR Management (if not pursuing one of these degrees please clearly explain how it relates to your long-term career goals)
  • Must be actively enrolled in an advanced degree program for duration of employment
  • Comfortable using basic coaching/counseling skills including active listening, asking open-ended questions, providing affirmations, reflections, summaries, and a strengths-based approach
  • Comfortable holding space for students experiencing anxiety, grief, sadness, etc. and providing empathic body language and verbal responses 
  • Strong desire to learn about the field of career development and career counseling 

  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Taken an introductory coaching or counseling techniques course
  • Previous experience supporting, advising, guiding students
  • Basic understanding of career development or motivational interviewing techniques
  • Previous work experience on a college campus

 

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Strong coaching, advising, and rapport building skills. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.  
  • Ability to incorporate multicultural competencies when working with students, faculty, and administrators.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution. 
  • Proficient with technology such as Microsoft Office 365 and videoconference/webcam applications (Zoom, Teams, etc.).

Student Career Advisor - Success Criteria:

The SCA supervisor and career center team have approved the SCA to meet 1:1 with students and alumni independently after demonstrating the following.

  • Uses active listening skills to identify students’ needs and support them.
  • Provides resume and cover letter support that meets Career Center standards.
  • Is Proficient in Handshake notetaking and explaining AI tools to students.
  • Adheres to their approved schedule and completes all administrative duties accurately and on time.
  • Demonstrates the ability to advise a diverse student body with varying life experiences.
