Counseling, Advising, Encouraging and Supporting!

You will do what a School Counselor should do almost all the time:

  • Academic Advising (helping students plan their classes and consider their future plans based upon their interests, career exploration and strenghts & weaknesses)
  • Career Counseling - Through yearly grade level exploration and career focused curriculum you will help students learn about many different future career options, get to play and practice a little and hopefully gain some more knowledge about the things they like to do
  • Personal & Social Counseling - Life can be tough, especially during the teenage years.  You will help students naviagate through anxiety, self-esteem concerns, perfectionism, family difficulties and many other normal challenges that students go through while they try to keep moving towards post-graduate next steps

Tools you will use to help you serve our students:

  • Naviance for academic advising, career exploration and marking exploratory milestones along their 4-year path towards graduation
  • teen Mental Health First Aid & Signs of Suicide programs to help our students learn to identify potential crises and to seek appropriate help for themselves or their friends

We serve students through:

  • Yearly individual meetings to discuss career interests and academic planning
  • Classroom curriculum explaining how students can take advantage of naviance to explore their career interests, future job possibilities and pathways to achieve those goals, as well as how to maximize one's opportunities and finance future planning
  • Classroom curriculum teaching mental wellness
  • Tracking students that struggle with attendance issues or academics that need a little extra encouragement
  • Large group presentations to grade levels to help keep everyone on the same page in terms of what are typical yearly activities and opportunities available to our student population
  • Close collaboration with each counseling colleagues, administration, teachers, social workers, translators and other support staff to brainstorm ways to individually support our students as needed
  • General support of our college/career preparatory testing (AP, PSAT, ASVAB)
  • Limited once a week duties

You will not:

  • regularly proctor SOL tests or any other testing (outside of assistance with AP/PSAT)
  • have lunch duty or any other daily duty (you have duty one day a week as is fair share with all other employees in the school)
  • be in charge of 504, IEP or other special meetings (you will participate in them as often as you are able as part of the team, you will not lead these proceedings)
