Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCF) is seeking 2 enthusiastic individuals to fill the seasonal positions of Outreach Interns. 

These positions are ideal for outgoing, organized, detail-oriented and independently motivated individuals with a passion for outdoor recreation, native fish conservation, and/or environmental science and education. Intern responsibilities will include providing outreach to anglers, campers, and other recreationists at campgrounds, trailheads, and river access sites. Outreach topics include bull trout identification and conservation, fish habitat needs, recreation ethics such as Leave No Trace, and information about planned and ongoing river restoration efforts. This position involves working outdoors in remote recreation areas, often in and around flowing water, occasionally performing manual labor in variable weather conditions, occasional night work, and camping in the field at least 1 day per week. Interns will work under direct supervision of the Outreach Crew Lead and Education & Outreach Coordinator. These positions will also work with other MCF Staff, including the Bull Trout Task Force, as well as agency partners and volunteers.

 

Schedule and Duration: These positions will work an average of 35 hours a week, and will typically work weekends, Friday-Monday up to 10 hours per day with 1 night of camping per week. Positions are expected to begin on June 20th, 2026 and end in early-to mid- September, 2026. 

Location: These positions’ official duty station will be in Ellensburg, WA but will regularly work throughout the Yakima Basin. MCF vehicles will be provided for required travel from the Ellensburg office. 

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Conduct a variety of outreach activities, including but not limited to: hosting educational booths and leading campground presentations to 1) educate Teanaway Community Forest recreationists about the importance of restoring fish habitat in the Teanaway River and notify them about ongoing restoration efforts and 2) educate recreationists and anglers about bull trout identification and conservation;
  • Promote responsible recreation and leave no trace principles to recreationists;
  • Remove recreational rock dams that block fish migration;
  • Promote opportunities for community involvement with MCF and partner organizations (including volunteer stewardship and education events);
  • Keep a daily record of outreach activities performed and the number of people reached;
  • Present a summary of public outreach work to land managers and the MCF Board of Directors. 
  • Create a final report that details the number of people contacted, summarizes the comments and concerns heard, and provides information about recreationists' priorities to be included in Teanaway restoration design.
  • Maintain professionalism with a variety of agency partners, MCF staff, and volunteers
  • Perform occasional stewardship tasks, such as trash removal from popular recreation sites.
  • Occasionally Work with state, federal, and tribal entities on various bull trout related research projects such as:
    • Bull trout redd (spawning), snorkel (age 18 and up only), and habitat surveys; and
    • Bull trout rescue from dewatering streams.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Must be self motivated, punctual, and dependable
  • Ability to perform all aspects of the work, including:
    • Being comfortable working in remote outdoor settings (without cell phone coverage);
    • Able to perform physically demanding manual labor outdoors on difficult and hazardous terrain in all types of weather and occasionally at night;
    • Capable of lifting 40 lbs. into and out of trucks, walking up to 5 miles daily over steep or uneven terrain;
    • Able to safely wade and swim in cold flowing water; 
    • Willing to camp 1 night per week for work
    • Willing to occasionally work at night between the hours of 9:00 PM and 2:00 AM (for applicants ages 18 and up only). 
  • Friendly, outgoing demeanor and ability to work well in a team environment
  • Passion for MCF’s mission, fisheries conservation, and outdoor recreation 
  • A can-do attitude and willingness to be flexible and learn new skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Previous job experience or coursework related to environmental science, conservation, restoration, fisheries, environmental education, and/or similar desired but not required

Compensation:  $17.13/hour
