Group Fitness Instructor

Job Title:  Group Fitness Instructor 

Status: Part-Time/Non-Exempt

Department:  Wellness 

Reports to:  Health and Wellness Dept.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Instructs group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within the class. Modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals. 
  2. Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being. 
  3. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  4. Promotes own classes as well as others in order to maximize attendance. Works with supervisor to identify potential changes needed, e.g., time, and modality, in order to maximize success of class.
  5. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.  Stays current and promotes programs, services, and special events at the YMCA.
  6. Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  7. Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and well-being.
  8. Follows departmental procedure when requesting time off for vacation, illness or emergency. Arranges own coverage when planning to take time off.
  9. Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  10. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  11. All other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Required certifications: CPR, AED, First Aid, OSHA and national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
  2. Additional training must be completed as required by the State and/or Federal Government, and by the YMCA. This training includes, but is not limited to, sexual harassment and child abuse prevention.
  3. Certification in areas of expertise.
  4. At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
