HEALTH EDUCATOR – BILINGUAL (ENGLISH/ CANTONESE)

NICOS Chinese Health Coalition is a public-private-community partnership of more than 30 health and human service organizations and concerned individuals. The mission of NICOS is to enhance the health and well-being of the San Francisco Chinese community. Since 1985, NICOS has been engaged in advocacy, research, training, coalition-building and program implementation for the benefit of this population and the organizations that serve it.
Position Summary:
NICOS Chinese Health Coalition provides education and advocacy on a variety of issues that impact the health and well-being of San Francisco’s Chinese community. Under the supervision of the Director of Programs, the Health Educator – Bilingual (English/Cantonese) is responsible for conducting community outreach and education to raise awareness of existing and emerging concerns such as children’s oral health, problem gambling, language access rights, healthcare access, problematic gaming/ screen-use, and available community resources to address these concerns; developing and facilitating in-language curriculum for use in presentations and workshops targeting appropriate segments of the Chinese community; developing bilingual educational materials/ tools for use across a variety of media, such as radio, television, print, online, and/or social; providing culturally appropriate resource and referral support. This may be a part-time or full-time position (30-40 hours/ week) to accommodate candidate’s preference/ availability.
Compensation: $22-$26/hr + benefits
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and conduct outreach and education using NICOS-developed bilingual curriculum to raise awareness of health issues impacting the Chinese and broader Asian American community, targeting at-risk/ affected students and community members, community health professionals and the general public
- Develop, update and maintain culturally and linguistically appropriate curriculum for educational sessions as well as messaging and materials/tools for use across a variety of mass media platforms such as radio, television, print, online, social, etc.
- Create opportunities for and facilitate in-language prevention-focused presentations, workshops and trainings for the Chinese community
- Provide culturally responsive resource and referral support for affected individuals/ families
- Keep abreast of existing and emerging concerns; collect data for advocacy purposes
- Develop new, innovative outreach strategies to target at-risk, hard-to-reach/ previously unreached audiences within the community
- Ensure integrity of service delivery, data collection and record-keeping systems
- Work with project team to attain program goals within contractual guidelines and budget
- Assist with the development of qualitative and statistical reports for funding sources
- Coordinate work with other related NICOS efforts and with collaborative partners
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bilingual/ bi-literate English/Chinese required (Fluency in Cantonese required; Mandarin and/or Taishanese a plus)
- BA/BS in health and human services, public health, social work, education or related field or four years equivalent work experience or equivalent combination of the two
- Strong knowledge of, demonstrated ability to work with the Chinese/ Asian American community
- Demonstrated outreach and education/teaching/training skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational, analytical and interpersonal skills
- Strong initiative, creativity and self-motivation
- Willingness to travel within the San Francisco Bay Area; have access to reliable local transportation
- Working knowledge of addictions and/or mental health issues helpful
