Sports & Recreation Instructor

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The Sports & Recreation Instructor is responsible for delivering a broad range of sports and fitness programs, including planning, implementing, supervising and ongoing evaluation of quality programs for youth ages 5 – 18.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Prepare Youth for Success

·        Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes;

·        Promote and encourage program participation;

·        Provide guidance and role modeling to members;

·        Maintain a safe and respectful environment.

Program Development and Implementation

·        Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities for members;

·        Instruct, coach and direct varied sports and recreational activities, emphasizing fair play and friendship;

·        Organizes intramural leagues and tournaments;

·        Maintains department equipment and storage room; manage/inventory/replace equipment with approval; 

·        Ensures that members are respectful of each other and the equipment;

·        Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure Club and child safety, quality programs and good appearance of the Club at all times. Track and assess outcomes through periodic activity reports;

·        Prepares daily, weekly and monthly program plans.

 

Supervision

·        Ensure a productive work environment by participating in weekly staff meetings, department meetings and corporate meetings;

·        Attends trainings and other development/professional growth opportunities as time and resources allow;

·        Participates in periodic assessment of own performance and develops own goals and objectives with Club Director;

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        May coordinate and participate in special programs and/or events;

·        Administers first aid to minor injuries and reports all injuries to the Club Director.

·        Other related tasks may be assigned, based on the needs of the Club and the supervisor’s request.

 

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/ instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.

External: Maintain contact with external community groups, schools, members' parents and others to assist in resolving problems.

 

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

•    Associate degree or higher in recreation physical education or related filed preferred

·         Experience in developing and implementing youth fitness and sports programs

•    Experience in working with children

•    Knowledge of youth development strategies

•    Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems

·         Able to maintain a high level of energy

•    Ability to deal with the general public

•    Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment

•    Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications within 90 days of hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Ability to continuously stand, walk or sit. Ability to function for more than two hours on your feet.  Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs and lift frequently. Ability to be outdoors during all seasons occasionally.
