Position Summary:
The Division of Student Life at The University at Buffalo seeks a compassionate, visionary and collaborative leader to serve as our next Director of Counseling Services. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Health & Wellness, the Director provides strategic and administrative leadership for a comprehensive university counseling center that promotes student well‑being and academic success through brief mental health services, crisis intervention, educational programming, and campus community consultation. As a member of the Wellness Team, you will help play a vital role in promoting mental health, wellbeing and success of UB’s diverse student community.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Provide strategic leadership, supervision, and direction for all Counseling Services operations, including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, and training programs.
- Develop and implement short- and long-term goals aligned with the university’s mission of fostering a healthy campus environment.
- Manage a multidisciplinary team of licensed mental health professionals, administrative staff, graduate trainees, and interns.
- Ensure compliance with ethical standards, state regulations, and accreditation requirements.
- Oversee departmental budgets, resource allocation, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with campus partners including Health Services, Campus Living, Health Promotion, Accessibility Resources, and academic departments to coordinate comprehensive student support.
- Lead data-informed assessment of programs and services to enhance student outcomes and inform strategic planning.
- Serve as a campus expert on student mental health and wellness issues, representing UB in system-wide and national professional organizations.
- Champion diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in clinical practice, staff development, and student engagement.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university in counseling, counselor education, psychology or a closely related field with a minimum of 4 years of experience.
- License eligible in the state of New York with the expectation of being licensed within 1 year of hire.
- A minimum of 4 years of experience in a clinical/counseling position at a college counseling center or related experience with similar population with at least two years in a clinical and/or supervisory capacity.
- Demonstrated experience in team leadership and supervision.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A Doctoral degree in Psychology is preferred.
- Progressive leadership experience in a university counseling center or comparable mental health service.
- Familiarity with Titanium electronic records system is highly desirable.
- Understanding of shifting college student demographics and their associated psychological challenges, including mental and behavioral health needs.

Salary Range:
$122,000 - $155,000
