School Counselor

School Counselor - Personal counseling is the first priority of the school counselor at Catholic High School, so counselors are assigned to students at each class level. The Catholic High counseling center strives to help the maturing and growing high-school student to have a better understanding of himself and others. Counselors endeavor to think through with the student the meaning of personal choices, to encourage him to recognize and achieve his own full academic potential, to develop moral values and social skills, and to adapt to life and its pressures. Consistent with CHS philosophy, the counselors work not only toward formation of better individuals, but also toward development of a more moral and more trusting society. To accomplish those goals, the school counselor's duties include the following: Personal Counseling:  Maintains a high level of confidentiality involving information received by a counselor during student conferences.  Recommends, if a situation requires further attention, and assists parents in seeking outside professional resources.  Passes along to CHS administration information that may affect the health or safety of a student, or information that is required by law to be registered with a child protection agency.  Passes along to teachers information as to a student's personal need for attention and/or encouragement.  As needed, solicits information from faculty on student behavior or academic performance and provides follow-up information for faculty when appropriate.  Responds to parents' requests to confer with sons and provides parents with appropriate information about the conference. Academic Counseling:  Meets with each assigned student at least once a year to establish rapport and to evaluate the student's academic progress.  Checks the accuracy of the student's transcript and alert the academic assistant principal if any irregularities are noted.  Counsels students in appropriate choice of courses for the following year.
