Science Instructor

Environmental Science & Mad Science Experiments Instructor – Afterschool and Summer Camp

Lightkeepers International LLC is seeking an experienced Instructor to lead hands-on Environmental Science and “Mad Science”–style experiments for students in grades K–8 in both afterschool and summer camp settings. The ideal candidate is a creative, energetic educator who can turn science concepts into exciting, safe, and memorable learning experiences.

Position overview

The Environmental Science & Mad Science Experiments Instructor will design and facilitate interactive lessons that explore topics such as ecosystems, weather, sustainability, chemistry, physics, and everyday STEM through kid-friendly experiments and projects. This role includes weekday afterschool hours during the school year and extended hours during summer camp and school breaks.

Responsibilities

Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate science lessons and experiments focused on environmental science, chemistry, physics, and general STEM.

Introduce and reinforce key scientific concepts (observation, prediction, cause and effect, problem-solving) through hands-on activities.

Set up, run, and safely manage experiments using common materials, emphasizing proper procedures and safety at all times.

Foster curiosity and critical thinking by encouraging student questions, discussion, and reflection on real-world applications.

Maintain a positive, inclusive classroom environment that supports diverse learners and promotes teamwork and respect.

Manage group behavior, transitions, and cleanup to keep sessions structured, fun, and efficient.

Communicate with site coordinators and families as needed, sharing class highlights and addressing any concerns.

Qualifications

Prior experience teaching or facilitating science/STEM programming for children in camp, afterschool, school, or community-based settings (required).

Strong background or demonstrated interest in environmental science, general science, or STEM fields.

Proven ability to lead and manage groups of 10–20 children independently in an active, hands-on learning environment.

Creativity and enthusiasm for designing fun, safe, and visually engaging experiments and projects.

Reliable, punctual, and organized, with availability for weekday afterschool hours and full/partial days during summer and school breaks.

Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or a related field, or equivalent experience working in youth science programs (preferred).

CPR/First Aid or other relevant certifications (preferred).
