Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Transportation Intern

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Convert field data such as signs, official actions, or speeds to spatial databases
  • Utilize existing INDOT geodatabases such as corridor speed data, crash data, and origin-destination to recommend improvements and create more holistic traffic planning GIS files and layers
  • Link excel tables and other file types to geographic tables to better access and visually interpret data
  • Collect field data as needed and work with field investigations teams to determine what data is pertinent to be stored online
  • Use existing GIS layers to find potential safety and mobility improvements
  • Work with other divisions such as district pavement to find where potential projects safety or mobility projects may be bundled with planned road work

In addition to the above positional responsibilities, Vincennes District interns will have the opportunity to visit active construction projects and tour various regional facilities such as Holiday World, the Evansville Regional Airport, Toyota Manufacturing, and/or the Ohio River Port of Indiana. You will also have opportunities to meet other summer interns throughout the state to best see what "a day in the life" at INDOT may look like for full-time employment.

About the Job:

This position will serve as a Geographic Information Systems Intern for the Technical Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the Vincennes District traffic engineer.
